Work-life blend

Updated: Apr 17, 2024

CEO Nick Mehta and Gainsight are once again on the top of the list of the most fantastic places to work. It’s not just because of their foresight in business, looking to develop software for what hasn’t been created yet. It’s about how they treat their people, or more specifically, how they listen to their people on how they want to be treated.

People who work at Gainsight love what they do and their work environment, and they tell their friends and family about it. Why? It’s not just an outstanding “balance” between work and life. It’s because Gainsight has figured out how to integrate work and life so that people feel like their work is part of their lives. Mehta calls it “work-life blend.

Many people think that their organization needs to offer options for the individual to blend their work and life. There is some truth to that, but what Gainsight has showcased is that there are individuals who are committed to both people and work in such a way that creates a culture of life where what they do and how they live seamlessly merge into and over one another. This is a work-life blend. It is not work-life balance; this is work-life integration.

The answer isn’t always to jump ship and find a company like Gainsight to work for. There are things we can learn from Gainsight to apply to our own lives to shift from the jolting grind of attempting to create a work-life balance, to developing the kind of life where you find more blending parts of your work and life that integrate in a way that builds confidence, relieves stress, and fosters health and wellness.

Mindset Matters

Who you are and how you think matters at home and work, but they don’t have to be segmented parts of your life. Burnout and becoming disgruntled both at home and work start in your head. Remembering what is great is hard when we’re constantly focused on what’s wrong. Gainsight has created space for its people to have these critical conversations, but you don’t need that from your organization to be able to have those talks. Getting a coach is a great place to start.

Teammate Culture

You may have a poor team at work, but can find a good teammate. At home, your teammates are already present. Instead of the company creating the best team possible, start with being the best teammate possible. When you are a great teammate, other team members start becoming great teammates. Like Gainsight, become an invaluable teammate resource and discover those who will be invaluable to you.

Emotional Intelligence

EI/EQ isn’t just a one-way street. We must become Emotionally Intelligent about others as well. Gainsight does a great job as a company that creates cultures of emotional intelligence. Still, you can develop your own culture of EI/EQ without the need for your organization to change. This will equip you both at work and in your life, and you’ll start to see similarities in both spaces of life and steadily begin to connect those parts of life together.
